Thank you for all the sites on sliceforms, which I had seen as "trellises" before. Much too labor intensive for me. I'm sure there are automated devices to help the professionals produce all those intricate sub-assemblies.

Hey Jeff,

Nice work. Very timely with my earlier post on sliceforms. I am very
curious about what sorts of things are being done recently. The
proliferation of the various and very affordable cutting machines (like
the CraftRobo) appears to be sparking quite a Renaissance in paper craft.

Have you been using the newer model CraftRobo? Are you happy with the
newer units?

Is there a pattern for that iris-folding CD case available for download
somewhere?

Best,

Andrew Crawford

Hello All,

It looks like a big OA news day!

I'm pleased to learn that OA artist Ingrid Siliakus is being featured in
a special edition of the UK magazine Wallpaper*. Apparently, the
special edition will go out to subscribers only. Unfortunately, the
edition on news stands will not feature Ingrid's work.

However, the cover image and the short piece about Ingrid currently
appears on the Wallpaper* web site. There is also an animation of the
piece they commissioned from Ingrid showing how it folds. For the
moment, there is an entry on the front page:

http://www.wallpaper.com/

I'm sure that is not permanent but, the direct link may be more durable:

http://www.wallpaper.com/art/limited-edition-cover-roll-over/2965

There is also a link from there to a short article about Ingrid:

http://www.wallpaper.com/art/ingrid-siliakus-q-a/2981

... and a small gallery of some of her work:

http://www.wallpaper.com/newgallery/17050756/1

... which you have likely also seen on Ingrid's site.

Congratulations Ingrid!

Andrew Crawford

P.S. - Ingrid has a couple of other images of the custom piece she did
for Wallpaper* on her site:

Just spent 15 minutes on google to get a picture, example,or definition of
sliceforms...who can form a definition to someone that has NEVER heard the word
before. Don't recommend video presentations for us hicks with
"dial-up".
Anybody?

Hi Holt,

I can see where watching video over dial-up might not be too pleasant.

I'll give the definition a shot:

A sliceform is a representation of a 3D solid object using flat pieces
with interlocking slots, typically arranged in a grid-like
configuration. The way they are constructed means that it is usually
possible to fold them flat.

I have also heard sliceforms attached to cards referred to as
"multi-piece OA."

A quick search for "sliceform" with Google Image Search (
http://images.google.com ) turned up a number of images of typical
sliceform constructs:

http://l3d.cs.colorado.edu/~ctg/Sliceforms.html

http://www.flickr.com/photos/7265584@N04/414786602/

Professor Chatani and Keiko Nakazawa's book _Pop-Up Geometric Origami_
is mostly sliceform constructs:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0870409433/arizonaaikidoA

Keiko Nakazawa has done quite a few sliceform flower card designs.

Marivi Garrido has done a number of architectural sliceforms or
sliceform-like designs. For example:

http://marivi_10.tripod.com/ghow2.jpg

http://marivi_10.tripod.com/perw.jpg

http://marivi_10.tripod.com/gaudi-gallery.html

There are several sliceform constructs in this Flickr gallery from one
of our fellow list members:

Anyone else have a more concise or accurate definition? Or more
prototypical/authoritative image sources?

Best,

Andrew Crawford
