I should have also mentioned that some of the software, particularly
software that comes with machines from the manufacturers, uses USB
security dongles.  That complicates the installation, use and longevity
of the software in the name of keeping you from stealing extra copies.

In actual practice, most dongled software is only useful for the
equipment with which it is sold and, is typically not anything anyone
would use if they had other choices.

Personally, at this point, I would avoid any cutters that can only be
run by dongled software.  That increases the risk of the problem you
describe.
